Marcelo Balboa named BCF Technical Advisory, Competitive Boys
3 Time World Cup Player and former US Men's National Team Captain
The Boulder County Force is excited to announce that Marcelo Balboa has accepted the position of Technical Advisor, Competitive Boys in a similar role as University of Colorado Women’s Soccer Head Coach, Bill Hempen, who is the Boulder County Force Technical Advisor, Competitive Girls.
As a soccer player, Marcelo Balboa hardly needs an introduction. A member of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame, Balboa is one of the most respected soccer players in U.S. history and arguably the best defender to play for the U.S. As a three-time World Cup player (1990, 1994, 1998) and former Captain of the U.S. Men’s National Team, Balboa ended his U.S. career with 128 national team appearances and 13 goals. Named to Major League Soccer’s All-Time Best XI, Balboa’s six-year MLS career included 24 goals and 23 assists in 152 games, including the MLS’ 2000 Goal of the Year (see below). Balboa is one of only three players (along with Paul Bravo and Chris Henderson) in the Colorado Rapids’ Gallery of Honor. Prior to the MLS, Balboa’s professional career included León in Mexico and pre-MLS professional clubs, Colorado Foxes, San Francisco Blackhawks and San Diego Nomads. In 1987, Balboa led San Diego State University to the NCAA Division I National Championship game. Balboa is a regular television announcer for MLS, World Cup and Olympic soccer games and hosts a weekly soccer radio show The Pitch on AM 1090 Thursday 10AM-Noon.
Balboa will be running training sessions, observing games and providing valuable feedback and insights to the Boulder County Force players and coaches. In the past, Balboa has been a competitive team coach for the Boulder County Force and an outstanding supporter of our soccer community. Balboa will now inspire and make an impact in the development of many more Boulder County Force soccer players and coaches.
"With the addition of both Balboa and Hempen to the Boulder County Force as Technical Advisors, we take a strong step forward in providing the best possible soccer experience for our players. Balboa and Hempen are more than advisors, they are role models in the community and fantastic compliments to our already top-notch coaching staff." explains, Hardy Kalisher, Boulder County Force’s Director of Operations.
